You would think that an interior light would be a standard feature in an upright freezer, but such is not the case. Interior lighting is an optional freezer feature that is often overlooked during the buying process. After all, it's usually very bright in the store so the freezer interior is not dark, nor are you trying to retrieve a food item at the time.
It often takes the first trip to the freezer after the appliance is installed to notice that something is missing. Since returning a freezer and looking for a replacement model with a light isn't something you want to consider, a freezer light should be tops on your list of required freezer features.
This feature is easy to confirm when checking the interior of freezers and the cost difference in a model with a light, is relatively minor. Lighting in refrigerator freezer compartments is also optional and is worth having for the same reason. Chest freezers used to come with interior lights, but it's not unusual to find base models that don't include lighting. It's always best to look for this feature when shopping for a freezer.
An interior light will make it much easier to organize your freezer contents and you'll be able to retrieve a frozen food item much more quickly than if you were groping in the dark. Unless you want to keep a flashlight handy, a freezer light is one convenience feature you don't want to be without. You'll also save energy when browsing is kept to a bare minimum.
